The Day Everything Changed
Three years ago, I drove to the bakset and heard it. That sickening pop that every athlete dreads. My Achilles tendon had completely ruptured.
One second I was doing what I loved. The next, I was flat on my back, staring at the ceiling, processing the fact that I'd just become the patient instead of the physical therapist.
And honestly?
That injury would teach me more about recovery than my entire education ever did.
The Problem Nobody Talks About
Going through Achilles recovery myself, I finally understood what my patients had been trying to tell me. Physical therapists are often overbooked and constantly distracted juggling between patients and getting their notes done on time. Insurance companies treat your body like just another number. Your treatment gets randomly interrupted after you've gone over a certain number of visits.
As a result, a lot of PT's, not all, fall into a simple trap - following generic and standard protocols. They're designed for efficiency, not for you. Your job, your goals, your body. None of that factors in.
You get squeezed into 30-minute slots where the therapist is already double booked, thinking about their next patient, or is trying to catch up on documentation . You're shuffled through basic exercises that may or may not be right for where you actually are in recovery.
And the whole time, you're burning through appointments, taking time off work, spending money. Without anyone explaining why you're doing what you're doing or what you should expect. I know because I'd been part of that system. One that prioritizes profit over people and protocols over personalization.
Guess what? I hated it. It nearly made me quit the profession all together. I got burnt out fast and needed a way out.
